Howdy! Happy Tuesday. We have a couple of big announcements and some exciting content for you all today.
We're officially re-naming the "Basecamp Newsletter" to the "Future Founders" Newsletter. We feel that this new name more accurately reflects the value and the audience: This is a weekly newsletter for the most ambitious people in every industry who are thinking about starting their next big thing.
Last week, many of you responded positively to our topic of building in public. Today, we're going to continue that topic with a short story and brilliant marketing strategy that we encourage you to try out.
One of our fellows wrote a fantastic blog post about his experience in Day One. Reading it made us blush. We hope it gets you excited, too!
Lastly, Gary Vaynerchuk will be joining us on our weekly live show, The Founder Hotline, on Oct 27. You can call in to ask Gary questions about anything.
Keep reading for a deeper dive on each...
Cheers,
Jake and the Day One team
THIS WEEK'S MARKETING STRATEGY
What Founders Can Learn From Two Country Musicians on TikTok
Two of my favorite musicians right now are Zach Bryan and Noah Kahan. Both are in the country/folk genre.
They each implemented a brilliant strategy on TikTok this year that made them both blow up. Don't worry though, I've been listening to them LONG before they were cool ;)
I think that more brands should pay attention to how they're marketing their music. Let's break it down:
Here's a video of Zach playing one of his new songs while it's still in the process of being written. The acoustic recording is raw, uncut, and vulnerable. His true fans LOVE it. Take a look at the comments, where fans are begging him to release the album. (click to watch)
Noah Kahan is doing something similar. You may have heard his two new tracks "Stick Season" and "Northern Attitude" in a similar format (raw, uncut, acoustic). And if you didn't see Noah's video, you very likely saw one of the millions of videos of other people covering his new songs in their own style. Like this: (click to watch)
So here's what's happening...
Zach and Noah are bringing their fans INTO the song writing process. Millions of people are already feeling deeply connected to the music before it's even launched. Many are creating their own versions and posting them as well.
It's raw, it's vulnerable, and it's working.
It's giving their fans something to look forward to, something to root for, and an identity to be proud of.
So what do you think happens on launch day?
Top charts. Look at these stats:
So why aren't more brands doing this?
This is building in public in a nutshell.
Our suggestion is to put out raw, day-to-day content that's vulnerable. Document the journey of building your product, your team, and your brand. Bring your fans into the process. Give them something to look forward to and something to root for. Create UGC with them along the way.
Because when it's time for you to release a product, host an event, or start a fundraise, you may soar to the top of the charts as well ;)
If you're looking to learn how to build in public and create a product with KP in 6 weeks, join The Build Track. It starts next week.
FELLOW BLOG POST
"The Leap — Why I Chose Day One"
One of our fellows, Jeremy, wrote a beautiful blog post last week about his experience in Day One, and in an effort to humbly brag, we wanted to share it with you ;)
"The main reason I decided to give Day One a chance was because they emphasized one thing that I held true, which was that the traditional business educational system is broken. It simply doesn’t work for individuals like myself, who are trying to grow a business and become creators and innovators inside of today’s market.
All of the research I did before jumping in, along with taking into account all of the entrepreneurs, business men and women who also vouched for the program helped calm my nerves. Through my five and a half years studying inside the college system, and my 14+ years of experience working for Fortune 500 companies, I knew all the tell-tale signs of “bad” intentions, and I definitely knew what the “good” ones looked like. So it was a fairly easy “yes!” for me."
Additionally, if you'd like to invest in Day One like Jeremy did, and join the Day One Collective, you can do so HERE on Republic.
UPCOMING EVENT
The Founder Hotline with Gary Vaynerchuk
We launched The Founder Hotline a few months ago to create a space for entrepreneurs and future-founders to call in anonymously and ask the raw, vulnerable, authentic questions that you would not bring up in a typical AMA.
Since launching, we've had dozens of callers and broadcasted to tens of thousands of listeners. It's been insanely fun.
On October 27, we'll be joined by our biggest guest to date: Gary Vaynerchuk. For one hour, anyone can join us on Twitter Spaces and can ask Gary ANYTHING.
Have a friend, family member, or colleague who doesn’t stop talking about starting a business? We’d love to help them. Refer them here. If you’re a fellow and they are also accepted, you’ll both get 10% off your membership fee this year.
